"C40 Cities, a network of 94 of the world’s biggest cities, released a report on Wednesday estimating how much consumption habits drive the climate crisis."

Discussion Questions:

Who is most responsible for the climate crisis – and thus plays the most important role in mitigating it? Corporations? Governments? Ordinary people?

"So unfortunately, as good as a metal straw or reusable cup might look, it's part of the problem unless it's encouraging us to buy less, and reuse, repair, and recycle the products we currently have."

Discussion Questions:

Ameliorating overconsumption requires collective action at the individual level. How can we spur and maintain this “culture shift” among the entire population? Ought it be forced, voluntary, or somewhere in between?

"What’s at the root of modern American consumerism? It might not just be competition among the brands trying to sell us things, but also competition among ourselves."

Discussion Questions:
Reflect: how has the current pandemic shifted your consumer habits? What are your “reference groups” (see Vox article)? What do you know about “zero-waste” and “minimalist” lifestyles?
