Fiction and Climate Change

Week 8 (8/31), Summer 2020

Readings

"Ahead of the Pack" by Helen Simpson - The Guardian
"Short story" by Jeanette Winterson - The Guardian

Guiding Questions

Jeanette Winterson writes that dinosaurs and humans differ because "dinosaurs destroy everything, but don’t call it progress." Do you consider this a fair point? What do you think of humans' progress up to this point?
The two readings appeal to the present in their exploration of current cultural realities. Does this help or hurt them? Compared to the readings, does this video exploring life in 2050 draw you more effectively towards imagining the future and spurring change?
Winterson's piece gives the polar bear a voice that humanizes the non-human. How has Western cultures' typically human-centric view of the climate crisis exasperated it?
